Moenkhausia copei is a peaceful community fish. They usually reach a length of about 6 or 7 cm and have an elongated shape with an orange or red tail. The tail colour variation is dependant on where they originate from. This species is generally common to a large area in the river basin of the Amazon and Rio Orinoco river. It is due to this large habitat that variations of the species have emerged in colour and brightness of those colours within the species.
A specimen from Venezuela will display bright red colouring, whilst a specimen from Peru will display more of a light orange. Moenkhausia copei appear to be an elongated version of the Moenkhausia colletti. However with the copei, the colouring is a deeper tone of red.
These fish are peaceful shoalers. They prefer a thickly planted aquarium with plenty of swimming areas and some subdued lighting.
The Moenkhausia cope is well suited for the community tank, so long as there aren't any overactive members. A wide range of foods will be accepted, though preferably live.
