GULPER CATFISH (Asterophysus batrachus)

The Gulper Catfish (Asterophysus batrachus) is a South American freshwater predator known for its massive, expandable mouth, allowing it to swallow prey larger than itself, making it a challenging but popular "monster fish" for experienced aquarists. These fish have scaleless bodies, rely on their sensitive barbels to hunt in deep, blackwater rivers, and require large tanks, solitary housing, and a varied diet of meaty foods, often fed infrequently due to their huge meals

• Appearance: Thick-set, scaleless body, large jaw that stretches incredibly wide, long barbels, and coloration from black to brown/orange.
• Size: Can reach 10-14 inches (25-35 cm) in home aquariums.
• Habitat: Native to Amazonian blackwater rivers, preferring tannin-rich water. 

• Tank Size: Needs large tanks; a 40-gallon breeder is minimum, but larger (75+ gallons) is better for adults, with bigger tanks for multiple fish.
