The Calico Oranda Round Body (Carassius auratus) is a highly sought-after, selectively bred fancy goldfish. It is widely celebrated in the aquarium hobby for its stout, egg-shaped body, flowing double tail, and its most defining trait—the "wen" (a prominent, benign, raspberry-like fleshy growth on its head). The "Calico" designation refers to its striking tri-color calico pattern consisting of mottled blue, orange, red, white, and black speckles.
Because their compact anatomy compresses their internal organs, they are slower, more delicate, and require specialized care compared to single-tailed common goldfish.
Care and Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons (approx. 115 liters) for a single adult fish, adding an extra 20 gallons for every additional fancy goldfish to handle their massive bioload.
  • Filtration: Heavy-duty filtration is mandatory. They generate significant waste, but the filter output should feature a diffuser because their round bodies make them weak swimmers that easily get stressed by harsh currents.
  • Water Parameters: Temperature: 65–72°F (18–22°C). pH: 7.0–7.5. Ammonia and nitrites must strictly be kept at 0 ppm.
  • Aquascape Decor: Smooth substrates and decorations only. Their oversized wens obscure their vision, and their flowing fins tear easily. Avoid sharp rocks, jagged driftwood, or fake plastic plants.
Dietary Needs

  • Sinking Pellets: Always opt for high-quality sinking foods rather than floating flakes. Gulping air at the surface can severely disrupt their delicate swim bladders, leading to buoyancy issues.
  • Fiber Supplements: Provide regular blanched vegetables like deseeded, crushed peas, spinach, or zucchini. High-fiber diets prevent the intestinal blockages to which their round bodies are highly susceptible.
  • Protein Treatment: Supplement with frozen or live treats like bloodworms, daphnia, or brine shrimp to support healthy wen growth and vibrant coloration.
Growth and Lifespan Profile

  • Adult Size: 8 to 10 inches (20 to 25 cm) in length when given optimal tank space and proper nutrition.
  • Lifespan: 10 to 15+ years, with some reaching over 20 years in highly maintained environments.
  • Wen Evolution: The iconic head growth typically begins developing around 3 to 4 months of age but won't fully mature or achieve its signature "crowned" look until the fish reaches about 1 to 2 years old
