The Indian Ricefish (Oryzias dancena) is a tiny, peaceful, and hardy schooling fish native to South and Southeast Asia. Maxing out at just 1–1.4 inches (2.5–3.5 cm), they are an excellent, adaptable choice for small nano or planted aquariums. They are highly adaptable and thrive in fresh to brackish water.
Key Care & Aquarium Parameters
- Schooling: Best kept in groups of at least 6 to ensure they feel secure and display active behaviors.
- Tank Size: A minimum of a 10-gallon tank is recommended for a proper school.
- Temperature: 64°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C).
- Water Chemistry: pH of 7.0–8.0 and fairly hard water (KH: 9–19 dGH). They can even tolerate mild brackish setups.
- Diet: Accepts flake food, tiny pellets, and frozen foods
Appearance & Behavior
These fish have transparent to pearl-white bodies with light blue-rimmed eyes and distinctive white-rimmed fins. Males are generally slimmer and develop longer, thread-like extensions on their dorsal and anal fins. They are peaceful community fish that mostly swim in the upper third of the water column, making them perfect companions for dwarf shrimp and other peaceful nano-fish.
