Scientific Name: Labidochromis sp. "perlmutt" (undescribed species; "perlmutt" is German for mother-of-pearl)
Origin: Endemic to rocky areas along the Tanzanian shore of Lake Malawi, specifically Higga Reef and Mbamba Bay Island
Size: Grows up to about 8–10 cm (3.2–4 inches)
Appearance: Pearly-white or cream body with a distinct lemon-yellow dorsal fin and yellow-orange highlights; males develop a brighter pearly sheen and dark bars, while females and juveniles show darker vertical bars
Temperament: Fairly peaceful to moderately aggressive compared to many other Mbuna species, though territorial males still require adequate space
Aquarium Care Requirements
Minimum Tank Size: At least 100 to 150 liters (approx. 30–40+ gallons) with a 3–4 foot footprint to allow proper territory establishment
Water Parameters: Temperature of 24–28°C (75–82°F), pH of 7.5–8.5, and hard, alkaline water (10–25 dGH)
Decor: Rocky aquascaping with caves, crevices, and dark substrate to mimic its natural reef habitat
Diet: Primarily insectivorous/omnivorous; accepts quality flakes, Mbuna pellets, and frozen or live proteins like brine shrimp and mysis shrimp
Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females incubate a small brood of roughly 10–25 fry for about 3 weeks
