The Red Black Apache Oranda (Carassius auratus) is a highly sought-after, premium variety of fancy goldfish. It is widely celebrated by aquarists for its dramatic, high-contrast coloration and regal silhouette
Physical Characteristics
- The "Apache" Pattern: This distinct color morph features a commanding jet-black body paired with a deep crimson red or vibrant orange head. Some individuals showcase a sharp contrast with cream or white highlights along the lower belly and chin.
- The Wen: Like all Orandas, they possess a fleshy, textured, raspberry-like head growth called a wen. In the Apache variety, the wen typically matures into a brilliant red crown that sits dramatically against their dark bodies.
- Body & Fins: They have a compact, egg-shaped body supported by large, elegant, split caudal (double) fins and a prominent dorsal fin, which are usually completely black.
- Size & Lifespan: They generally grow to about 6 to 7 inches (15–18 cm) in a standard home aquarium but can reach up to 8–12 inches in massive setups. With pristine care, they boast a lifespan of 10 to 20+ years.
Aquarium & Care Requirements
Because of their anatomical modifications (compact bodies and heavy head growth), Apache Orandas require specialized care to thrive:
- Tank Size: A minimum of 30 to 40 gallons (approx. 115–150 liters) is highly recommended for the first fish, with an additional 10–15 gallons for every fancy goldfish added after.
- Filtration & Waste: Goldfish produce an immense amount of bioload. Powerful, heavy filtration is non-negotiable. However, because Orandas are slow, clumsy swimmers, the filter output should feature diffused flow so they aren't pushed around by harsh currents.
-
Water Parameters: They prefer clean, well-oxygenated, cooler water.
- Temperature: 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Note: High-grade imports raised in tropical climates like Thailand often ship out needing warmer water initially (78–80°F) before being gradually acclimated to standard cool water.
- pH: 7.0 – 8.0.
- Safe Décor: Their flowing fins and fleshy wens are incredibly delicate and prone to injury or bacterial infections. Keep the tank layout open and strictly avoid sharp, jagged rocks, or rough artificial decorations. Stick to smooth driftwood, rounded river stones, and sturdy live plants like Anubias or Java Fern.
Diet & Health Nuances
- Preventing Swim Bladder Issues: Their round, compacted spines compress their internal organs, making fancy goldfish highly vulnerable to gastrointestinal issues and swim bladder disorder. Avoid floating flakes that force them to gulp air at the surface. Instead, feed high-quality sinking pellets.
- Nutritional Variety: Supplement their diet with frozen treats (like brine shrimp or bloodworms) and fiber-rich, blanched vegetables (such as shelled peas or spinach) to keep their digestive tracts moving smoothly.
- Vision Impairment: As Apache Orandas mature, their wens can grow excessively large, sometimes partially tracking over or blocking their eyes. Ensure food is dropped right in front of them if they struggle to spot it
Tankmate Compatibility
- Best Matches: Keep Apache Orandas with other slow-moving, similarly shaped fancy goldfish varieties (such as the Ryukin, Ranchu, Black Moor, or Telescope eye).
- Who to Avoid: Never house them with fast, streamlined, single-tail goldfish (like Commons or Comets), as those varieties will quickly outcompete your Oranda for food. Avoid aggressive or notorious fin-nipping fish that might target their trailing fins or textured wens
