The Red-spot puffer (Pao abei) is a small, freshwater pufferfish (4 inches) known for its vibrant red spots on a yellowish-green body. Highly territorial and intelligent, they require a minimum 25-gallon (100-liter) tank with sandy substrate, prefer live/frozen foods, and are best kept alone due to aggression.
Key Care Requirements:
- Tank Size: 100 liters (approx. 25-30 gallons) minimum for a single specimen, as they are aggressive and territorial.
- Diet: Exclusively carnivorous; requires frozen or live foods like snails, shrimp, and bloodworms to keep their constantly growing teeth in check.
-
Water Parameters: Freshwater, 23–27°C (
), pH 6.4–7.1.
- Tank Setup: Dense planting with caves and fine sand substrate to suit their bottom-dwelling, ambush-predator nature.
- Maintenance: Sensitive to poor water quality, requiring efficient filtration and regular water changes to manage nitrates.
Often confused with other "red" puffers like the Red-eyed puffer (Carinotetraodon lorteti) or Red-spotted potato puffer (Tetraodon miurus), the Pao abei is distinct, with a high, sloping forehead and distinct spotted pattern
