Aequidens superomaculatum, commonly known as the Super Orange Acara or Super Orange Aequidens, is a South American cichlid species scientifically described in 2015. Native to the upper Orinoco and Río Negro basins in Venezuela and the Casiquiare river region, it is prized in the aquarium hobby for its vibrant golden-orange coloration and relatively peaceful temperament.
Physical Traits and Identification
Size: Grows to an adult length of about 5 to 6 inches (12–15 cm).
Coloration: Develops rich burnt-orange, golden, and yellow hues across the body as it matures.
Distinct Markings: Named superomaculatum ("spot above") because its dark lateral body blotch is positioned unusually high on the flank, sitting well above a continuous horizontal mid-lateral stripe.
Aquarium Care and Requirements
Tank Size: Minimum of 30 gallons for a single specimen or a bonded pair; larger (75+ gallons) for a community setting.
Water Parameters: Prefers soft, acidic to neutral blackwater conditions mirroring its natural habitat, though captive-bred specimens adapt well to stable, clean freshwater parameters.
Temperament: Placid compared to aggressive cichlids, but can still display territorial sparring during breeding or when kept in cramped quarters.
Diet: Omnivorous; readily accepts high-quality sinking pellets, frozen foods like bloodworms or brine shrimp, and occasional live foods
