The Tricolor Oranda (Carassius auratus) is a highly sought-after variety of fancy goldfish. It is prized for its egg-shaped body, long flowing fins, and a prominent bubble-like headgrowth called a wen. What makes this specific variety stand out is its distinctive tri-color pattern, which features a striking, mottled blend of red/orange, black, and white scales.
Key Characteristics

  • The Wen: The signature fleshy growth on top of their head typically develops as the fish matures (around 1–2 years of age). It is often compared to a raspberry.
  • Size: They generally reach a length of 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inches), though giant variations can grow up to 30 cm (12 inches) if given enough space.
  • Color Lifespan: Like many fancy goldfish, their color patterns are rarely permanent. It is very common for Tricolor Orandas to shift colors as they age, often losing their black coloration over time due to genetics, lighting, or water conditions.
Care & Tank Requirements

Tricolor Orandas are modified, heavy-bodied fish. Because of this, they are slower swimmers and require a bit more maintenance than streamlined, single-tail goldfish varieties.
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 75–110 litres (20–30 gallons) for the first fish is recommended, with an additional 40 litres (10 gallons) for each subsequent goldfish to accommodate their heavy bioload.
  • Filtration: High-quality, robust filtration is required because goldfish produce a massive amount of waste. However, the water current should be kept gentle so it doesn't stress or exhaust these slow swimmers.
  • Water Parameters: They thrive best in stable temperatures between 18°C and 23°C (65°F–74°F), with a neutral pH range around 7.0–7.5.
  • Tank Setup: Avoid sharp plastic decorations or rough rocks. Their delicate wen and large flowing fins can easily scratch or tear, making them susceptible to bacterial infections. Use smooth river rocks or silk plants instead.
Diet & Feeding

Orandas are opportunistic omnivores and eat constantly. Because their compressed body shape crams their internal organs together, they are highly prone to swim bladder disorders and bloating.
  • Provide high-quality, sinking pellets specifically formulated for fancy goldfish to prevent them from gulping excess air at the surface.
  • Supplement their diet with blanched vegetables (like peas with the skins removed, spinach, or zucchini) and occasional protein treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
Compatible Tankmates

Because Orandas are slow and have somewhat impaired vision due to their wens, they should only be housed with other slow-moving, peaceful fancy goldfish like Ranchus, Ryukins, Fantails, or Black Moors. Fast-swimming fish (like common goldfish or barbs) will outcompete them for food and may nip at their delicate wens or fins.
